| Expectations exceededNew Orleans rolled the dice by mounting Mardi Gras this year with reduced city 1699 services and a 1699 shortage of hospital beds. New Orleans Police spokesman Dave Adams said Tuesday that the smaller 1699 crowds made for a Mardi Gras with very little crime, and Nagin called the celebration nearly flawless. Many Mardi Gras regulars said they like the scaled-down celebration better: it was easier to get into their favorite restaurants (if they'd re-opened), and easier to navigate the streets. The parades and celebrations in the weeks leading to Fat Tuesday traditionally pumped about $1 billion into the city's economy every year before Katrina, from sources such as salaries paid to people building floats and sewing costumes and the more obvious hotel and restaurant revenues. It's too early to measure revenue this time, but Sandra Shilstone of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, said the celebration has exceeded expectations. |
