Never before have the words "Eat, Drink, And Be Merry; For Tomorrow We Die" run through my head with such concert frequency. We live so close to concert Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas that I can see floats in two directions. The route this year -- standardized to accommodate a smaller police force -- follows these two streets to St. Charles, Canal, and then back to Tchoupitoulas. In effect, 50 square blocks including mine are walled concert off from easy entry and egress. For a moment, I am panicky. It's all good until someone needs an ambulance. And with the excessive eating, drinking, and ingestion of other substances, someone always needs an ambulance. In the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras, the local paper carried sobering reports of the City's lack of hospital beds and limited emergency room capacity. This is during regular times, and we're in the thick of carnival celebrations. I forego my purse when I go to the parades, preferring to stuff my ID, bank card, and cash in my jean pockets.
