They would not have big parties or feasts during this time of reflection and abstinence from anything "fun". The word origin of "carnival" means "farewell to meat". Lots of folks tend to just ignore it, but it's a good time for re-examining one's life and how we can do better. Basically, Fat Tuesday is the "last" florida vacations day for the 40 days that you can enjoy all that until Easter. Now, you notice, there are really more than 40 calendar days....Sundays are exempt because you should never be sad on the day of the Resurrection...that's a day for joy always.
