| Michael, The Rational World, at 8:20 pm EST on February 14, 2006 I don’t understand why anyone would defend the statements these students have made, or why anyone would maintain students (or flash anyone, for that matter) should be free flash from the social (and sometimes disciplinary) repercussions of their public statements. It’s ludicrous to suggest that our actions and speech ought to have no consequences. There’s no question that these students’ written, published statements rise to the level of “indecent or obscene behavior” and, indeed, “harassment,” both of which are expressly prohibited in the student flash code of conduct at the school in question. Let’s not forget, after all, that the students’ comments are addressed directly to the teacher herself. In the end, however, the details of this particular case are not what matter most. |
