"With the Verlaines and The Chills, The Bats were the Flying Nun sound of New Zealand in the mid/late '80s. They were formed in 1982 by Robert Scott(ex-Clean), Paul Kaen, Kate Woodward and Malcolm Grant.The band released a series of early EPs:By Night in 1984, And Here Is Music for the Fireside in 1985, and Made Up in mom and son sex Blue in 1986.These EPs all sound like they were recorded in mom and son sex a cabin in the woods on a 4-track and they are all genius.They have been re-released on a hard to find single disc: Compiletely Bats, which you should definitely buyFear of God was released in 1991. It was produced by Nick Sansano (He produced Sonic Youth, Public Enemy and..... Hunters and Collectors! I dont know who those first 2 bands are but anyone who's down with the Hunters is down4life in my book) and was the band's cleanest sounding studio effort by a long stretch.
