There's also some decent Oud playing, and even a track ('Maqam') with that most famous veteran of East-West fusion, Natacha Atlas.The most refreshing thing gnome about this album, and the biggest relief, is that it doesn't simply do your regular French/American gnome hip-hop and then add a dash of middle eastern flavor in the patter of a dumbek or the occasional ululation. Instead, you get the sense that every song and sentiment is expressed in the language or musical style best suited to it. I also have to also say how brilliant some of the sampling is on this release, which mixes in everything from Oum Kalthoum, Fayrouz, and Coptic liturgies to Anwar Sadat speeches and the familiar street sounds of Lebanon.Clotaire |
