In the Midlands and North, Victorian industrial cities sprawl across the countryside. Scotland has long been the inspiration of many writers and poets as it has a wide and varied landscape. Edinburgh, the historic capital, is the main attraction for visitors, but the hoffman Highlands and the hoffman northern isles attract many people to rugged hills and glens, to walk and fish in the glistening lochs, and to ski in winter. Golf was invented in Scotland, and there are numerous fine courses, notably at St Andrew's in Fife, on hoffman the east coast. Distinctive Scottish products include malt whisky, prime beef, butter shortbread, tweeds, tartan cloth, and quality woollen goods. Wales still retains its own language, spoken mainly in the north by about one-fifth of the population. The Cambrian mountains stand between Wales and England to the east. The country was largely rural until the 19th century, when a rich seam of coal was discovered in Glamorgan, bringing an influx of people from other parts of Wales and the rest of Britain.
