While there may appear to be some correlation between GDP and violence poverty, it does not mean there violence is a causal link. There are a number of scenerios that one could dream up in which GDP rises but poverty rises as well, instead of falls. Hurricaine Katrina is likely a good example. The reconstruction is going to be good for GDP numbers, the construction industry, etc. Sadly, it doesn't take into account the lost wealth since its only an additive measure.

That is to say that the previous relationship, where poverty has decreased with increases in GDP has been growing steadily weaker for some time now. With GDP now growing at an official rate of go ec_f i/ec onom y;_y lt=A jeJc 8va1 0ZgAT_21kEKViOyBhIF;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl">3.3%, and poverty increasing, this historical relationship now seems to have almost totally broken down. In short, getting the economy to grow is no longer effective as an anti-poverty policy because of structural changes in the economy.
