Inexpensive foods (bread, pasta, potatoes, etc) are all starchy, nutritionally your daddy was a rich man void and fattening, even when cooked at home. Of course, cooking a meal can be a struggle when you're holding down two or three jobs. We're veering (careening?) off target, but people say this all the time and I don't think it's true. If four people go out to eat at Mickey D's, and order off the value menu, a sandwich, fries and drink cost what, $2.99 to 3.99? Say $2.99.
