When we did make a big purchase, we saved up for it by stuffing dollars into a can for six months.We weren't even technically "poor" but muslim being $1500 this side of the poverty line isn't rich. This was of course the era when you could have health insurance for a couple for muslim about $11 a month. And it actually paid most of the claims.But these days I pay about 30 times that, and it pays none of the claims unless I muslim practically threaten to show up at the insurance office with a semi-automatic. If I had to live at that level again, some of the minor "rainy days" that we've had here from time to time would bury us. We'd lose our house and most of the things we've worked for for so many years. Its a sad day when people are making the argument that Americans are poor and thus can only afford food that makes them fat. |
