The Gini index is free market utterly free market irrelevant if the question is whether the typical American household is doing better or worse. If you refer back to the historical free market income tables once again, you will see that the long term trend is that every quintile has been gaining, in real terms. This was happening even as the Gini index for the population was steadily rising over the same period. Also, income distribution is only a Lorenz curve if you plot it as a Lorenz curve. If you plot, for instance, the population in $5,000 income increments, you see a relatively flat distribution, that is flatter than a normal (bell curve) distribution around the median.
