The difference suggests a considerable structural change in the US economy, and the fact that there is a concurrent change to the geographic distribution of poverty could well be significant. There are some teaching things that the states on the list have in common such as the fact that most are rust-belt states. There are other things that they do not have in common — roughly half teaching the states on the teaching list are below the national average unemployment rate, and half are above. The topic certainly merits further study and further discussion. In any case, I wanted to dispel the simplistic notion that the US, as a whole, was experiencing an increase in poverty, because the truth is quite a bit more complicated than that.
