Nearly all of the increase in poverty rate from 2003 to 2004 can be attributed to an increase in poverty among whites in a handful of states: Indiana (up 1.3%), Kentucky (1.8%), Maryland (1.2%), Missouri (1.2%), Ohio (0.9%), Pennsylvania (0.9%), and Wisconsin (1.9%).
