I think people that think fast food=cheaper have A) never been poor (you get awfully good at stretching food out) and B) don't know how to cook. Of course this doesn't work for homeless people, but in my experience most homeless people don't buy a whole lot of band food anyway. And you didn't include spices, condiments, cooking oil, utensils, etc. I could eat plain chicken, potatoes, and green beans for one meal, but I'd end up either throwing out the leftovers or dressing them up (with more ingredients=more cost and more trips to the store). I know how to cook, I'm good at it, and I can't stand having to do it more than a few times a week.
