It’s hackers ludicrous to suggest that our actions and speech ought to have no consequences. There’s no question that these students’ written, published statements rise to the level of “indecent or obscene behavior” and, indeed, “harassment,” both of which are expressly prohibited in the student hackers code of conduct at the school in question. Let’s not forget, after all, that the students’ comments are addressed directly to the teacher herself. In the end, however, the details of this particular case are not what matter most. What’s really at stake here is the changing reality of the public/private divide and the way that universities, faculty, and students are all struggling deal with these changes. |
