There d.o.a. (band) are a number of problems with using the median income to judge how well off people are. You mentioned one of those problems — not being able to consider changes d.o.a. (band) to the distribution of income. Another problem is that d.o.a. (band) median income does not take tax policy into account, and so skews the picture to indicate that certain quintiles are worse off than they truly are. (There is an additional complication to taxes due to the progressive nature of the income tax versus the regressive nature of payroll taxes.) One thing we can say is that the people who say that most newly created jobs pay much less than the jobs they replaced haven't got any objective data to prove their claim.
