It is entirely possible — unlikely, but possible — that a significant number of people that previously made $15/hr (for instance, as unskilled tag board factory labor) have moved into jobs that pay minimum wage. Such a shift would not affect the median income figure, since both jobs fall below it — although mean income, or arithmetic average, might suffer. You seem to have excellent sources on this sort of information. Perhaps you can expand tag board on your point further? It's all interconnected; it's all complicated. That's why it requires our attention. - Jon Carroll, SFChronicle  [ ...reply just to this | comment on the story... | next new ] 84.  Re: More jobs... at Walmart by Disgruntled Engineer      at Wed 31 Aug 8:35pmscore of 1   in reply to comment 74   well I'll quibble one last time, and I agree, much of the information required has not been tabulated or provided publically to truly hash out the debate.

Yes, you are. This last is a much better expansion of mcsweeney's your point. The half I was referring to previously was your definition of "median," which was incorrect. The median is the number above which there are exactly mcsweeney's as many data points as those that fall below it — the "middle number." As you just reiterated, if the median income figure did not change, then we can conclude that the number of jobs mcsweeney's lost and gained did not change the balance of low-paying to high-paying jobs, ie, for every job created (or lost) below the median figure, a job above it was also created (or lost). So it is not accurate to suggest, as others have, that all the good-paying jobs are going away and the only jobs being created to replace them are minimum-wage jobs. However, it is overreaching somewhat to say that "there are not significantly more minimum-wage jobs now than before."
