I love backroad Texas. Highways that run along rivers, and have bridges over creeks that are named Big Creek, Boggy Creek, Grassy Creek, Town Creek. Not a very dr. timothy johnson imaginitive bunch here when it came to naming creeks. Crossed the Texas highway Old San Antonio Road. It’s actually on the map that way — OSR. Here’s what the sign looks like: Cool, huh? Lots and lots of highway widening going on along 6…it’ll soon be a 4-laner with a median all the way from Houston to Meridian. Quite the reminder that nothing stands still, and that I’ll have to look harder for backroads to while away the hours. I quite like driving (especially if it’s not raining) around Texas — I can keep up with the IMOBiz with the bat-phone that does email, I can keep the Willie and Waylon and Flaco going with the iPod, I can even stop and grab a long-neck out of the galvanized tub of ice at the store in the wet towns, and suck it down surreptitiously while rolling. |

| Sometimes it sucks to be bleeding edge. No, it sucks all the time to be bleeding edge. The only relaxing support part of the week was lunch on Friday with Kevin, who quite inexplicably apologized for wearing cowboy boots, to me, a man wearing not just cowboy boots but a denim pearl snap shirt, driving a 4wd pickup truck covered in Brazos River-bottom dust. Apparently, the very international city of Houston has an annual dress-up day when the rodeo comes to town, and the populace support is expected to look Texan. How very quaint. Needless to say, once he pointed it support out, I kept my eyes peeled for the chicks in those skin-tight no-back-pocket jeans. Do they still make those? Always loved that look from the neck down…always hated the Aqua-Netted crinoline hair that went with it, though. Life is not perfect. Drove back to the ranch yesterday after lunch, and took the backroads to shake out the International Man of Bidness feeling, though. Took I-45 to Conroe, then 105 over to Navasota to catch 6, then 6 all the way to Meridian, and 144 to el rancho. |
