The romance between do it-yourself the fat girl and the great guy who loves her all along, despite her weight problem, is predictable and has been done before. I think it would have worked better if it took a back seat to Maggie's deteriorating friendship with Olivia, as Olivia becomes more and more determined to let go of who do it-yourself she really is. Still a pleasurable light read with a likeable heroine. Was this review helpful to you? | Liza Palmer has put a new twist on the "fat chick lit" genre by exploring what happens AFTER the fat girl loses the weight and lives happily ever after - or maybe not so happily. "Conversations With The Fat Girl" is narrated by Maggie, who watches from the sidelines while her best friend and former fellow plus size Olivia changes her life after undergoing gastric bypass surgery. It's an interesting exhibition perspective, and what exhibition I appreciated most was that the author didn't go the route of "Jemima J" (quite possibly the most offensive novel about weight loss ever written) by exhibition having the fat girl achieve all of her goals and dreams by shedding the weight, and live happily ever after. Although it may seem on the surface that Olivia has done just that - she even tries to convince Maggie that she has - she really isn't all that happy. She's marrying a jerk who wouldn't look at her twice before she became a size two, and she's sacrificed her true friendship with Maggie to hang out with the "popular girls", like Gwen. |
