Fat Girl represents Breillat's biggest critical success to date, attracting good reviews and a handful of awards and nominations at international film festivals. However, while it screened at this past September's Toronto International Film Festival, it appears that may have been the only theatre opportunity for Toronto residents to see the film, since the Ontario Film Review Board has elected to bar its release in the province. It was at the Toronto film theatre fest that Reel caught up with Catherine Breillat, and she talked about her story's beginning, why she doesn't worry about theatre Fat Girl's abrupt shift in tone, and what it took to make a 13-year-old cry. Q: What was the basis for this story? Because it starts out as one thing then it turns into something entirely different. Catherine Breillat: It started off … I actually saw a young girl, who was 12 years old and she was swimming.
