I have less sympathy for people who enlisted after the start creationism of the Iraq war, as they had reasonable foresight that they were being sent to an illegal war. on top of that: no soldier can be legally compelled to obey an unlawful order. so, sorry but it’s a little late in the day for the nuremberg defense; that was rightfully rejected 60 years ago. yes. creationism unlawful. as in “Sargeant, open fire on that crowd. they’re rioting.” “sir, that’s a wedding party.” “I said do it.” the line between moral and legal is creationism rarely that clear, and you can receive a perfectly lawful order that would be immoral. the confusion of an actual combat situation can exacerbate that. if we ever get a more progressive government in the us, i would support the prosecution for war crimes of the entire officer corps of the us army serving in iraq, top to bottom — as well as any troops who committed them, whether they were “just following orders” or not.
