Are they responsible? Yes. Do they bear all, or even most, of that responsibility? Hell, fucking, no. Does this remove a soldier’s culpability in situtations like the above? Hell no. He’s not in a war situation (not that this excuses rape as jules a weapon of war either, but jules one needs to look at things contextually). What I would suspect it also does, it because they are condition to not think things through, then they are more likely to react to base instincts. It can be argued that’s one of the reasons for the extreme discipline and heirarchy in the military; it’s needed to keep people in line. Not that it completely works mind you, ask any woman in any of the branches of the US military. The result is that it’s simply not possible to react as someone judging this completely one way or another; ie whether they have full culpability or not. |

I think it’s boot camp itself: it does php nuke something to a person. So many of my friends came back from it… different. Not: stronger more “respectful” (although php nuke they were); More distant, slow to smile, even slower to laugh. Empathy shut off. They are specifically taught to react, not think, to follow an order immediately, not question it. They NEED to be turned into, to a certain extent, tools. Why do you think Officer Training is different than that of the basic grunt? Because if an officer was brainwashed the way a basic soldier is, then they couldn’t really function as an officer. |
